Monel Blind Rivet 4.8 x 20 mm – Honsel

The 4.8 x 20 mm is the long one in the ILCA spar set. It has a specific job, so most sailors only need a couple, but when you need it nothing shorter will set properly.

What it fits

• Aluminium traveller fairlead on the boom, two rivets. The older plastic fairlead takes a 16 mm instead
• Any fitting where you are riveting through 14 to 16 mm of material, such as a thick plug or a doubled section

Monel is a nickel-copper alloy that sits close to aluminium electrically, so it survives at a spar fitting where stainless would pit the alloy around the hole. Honsel extrude theirs from wire rather than drawing them from strip, which gives higher strength and keeps the broken mandrel captive in the sleeve. The sleeve is additionally galvanised and the mandrel is A4 stainless, so nothing is left in the hole to rust and stain your spar.

Grip range 14.0 to 16.0 mm, 4.9 mm drill, 9.5 mm head. Check the grip against your actual fitting before you drill, because a 20 mm is too long for most single-wall positions. Use an anti-corrosion paste such as Duralac or Tef-Gel in the hole when you are putting stainless fittings onto an aluminium spar.
