Description
The 4.8 x 16 mm Monel rivet is the medium length in the ILCA spar set. It is the one for the joints that go through a plug or a doubled section rather than a single wall.
What it fits
- Top section connector sleeve on the upper mast, one rivet
- Inboard boom plug at the gooseneck end, one rivet
- Clamcleat on the boom, two rivets
- Plastic traveller fairlead on the boom, two rivets
- Lacing eye on the boom where you want the longer grip, two rivets
Monel is a nickel-copper alloy that sits close to aluminium electrically, so it survives at a spar fitting where stainless would pit the alloy around the hole. Honsel extrude theirs from wire rather than drawing them from strip, which gives higher strength and keeps the broken mandrel captive in the sleeve. The sleeve is additionally galvanised and the mandrel is A4 stainless, so nothing is left in the hole to rust and stain your spar.
Grip range 10.0 to 12.0 mm, 4.9 mm drill, 9.5 mm head. Use an anti-corrosion paste such as Duralac or Tef-Gel in the hole when you are putting stainless fittings onto an aluminium spar.
